Overview & Background
A professor and a lecturer from the Anthropology department
of UC Santa Cruz want to take 10-15 students to Auroville
for 6 weeks in the summer of 2005. They are not being paid
for teaching and this is not a UCSC program; it is an opportunity
to travel abroad with two UCSC faculty while exploring anthropological
and community related themes in and around Auroville, India.
Students registered at UCSC can get 5 (maybe even 10) independent
study units through the Anthropology department.
Program Description
This summer program will be an anthropological exploration
of current regional development issues in India. Students
are introduced to issues relating to sustainable agriculture,
community building, women’s empowerment and ecological
movements through integrated field activities in collaboration
with local researchers and development agencies. Students
will also be attending courses taught in Auroville by Aurovilians
- these courses will focus on Sri
Aurobindo's Integral Yoga.
