Auroville Dog Shelter Inaugurates a New Space
The Auroville Dog Shelter inaugurated a new space for their permanent location last month. The inauguration of the new Auroville Dog Shelter took place under the honorable presence of the Dean of mettupalayam college (RIVER). He also opened the Canine Care Camp which will last 2 days to microchip, vaccinate, deworm all of our dogs to fulfil the terms and conditions of the grant. We are very happy that the Dean offered us to sign a MoU establishing the Auroville Dog Shelter as education place for vet interns.

The Auroville Dog Shelter is the new iteration of Auroville’s central dog care service. The Auroville Dog Shelter is a registered AV Unit under the Auroville Service Trust which has taken over the responsibility to look after hundreds of dogs in April 2023.
he Auroville Dog Shelter follows the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India, who had recognised it as a Non-Governmental Animal Care Organisation. It is run by a professional team of animal caretakers, veterinarians, staff and volunteers under the management of Arthur Birago, integral dog training specialist and author.
Besides giving love and care to more than 200 dogs, the shelter provides cost price sterilizations, free vaccinations and rescues in Auroville and the entire bioregion
The puppies and dogs at the Auroville Dog Shelter are mostly Tamil “village dog” breed, short haired, friendly, pointy nosed, usually black or tan with white or black markings. You often see them sleeping in the sun, on streets and temple steps.
Due to the size of the rescue project – 300 dogs currently, they are coordinating large scale funding projects for the numerous needs of the new shelter. All the donations will go to the newly formed service unit, and the team will be working both with Auroville financial services as well as AVI USA to implement regular reports on the progress of their goals.
In the last year they successfully conducted several fundraising campaigns from eradicting skin diseases, anemia, building dog houses, sterilising 100 dogs and providing mobile street treatment and vaccination drives. Previous campaigns included a campaign that led to the successful building of dog housing, as well as fighting demodactic mange which was prevalent at the shelter when the current team started in 2023.

Dr. Latha, the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry of Tamil Nadu visits the Auroville Dog Shelter
Dr. Latha, the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry in Villupuram region, Tamil Nadu, visited the Auroville Dog Shelter to inspect and verify the standards of dog care.
Dr. Latha verified and confirmed that we do outstanding work and also will give their recommendation for the new shelter! Thank you Dr. Latha.

Volunteer Program with the Mettupalayam RIVER College
The Auroville Dog Shelter has began a wonderful collaboration with the students of Mettupalayam RIVER College Veterinary Program.

The Auroville Dog Shelter is very happy that the Dean offered to sign a MoU establishing the Auroville Dog Shelter as education place for vet interns. The Auroville Software Shelter is always in need of volunteers, especially skilled volunteers with training and interest in studying in animal care.
