Auroville International USA (AVI USA) is an independent US based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports and promotes the ideals and projects of Auroville, a unique township in South India founded with the vision of human unity, peace, and spiritual evolution.
As a US organization, AVI USA is legally separate and independent of Auroville. It operates as a “Friends Of” organization that raises funds, builds awareness, and channels support to international projects aligned with Auroville’s founding principles. A “Friends of” organization is a special category of a 501(c)(3) federal registered charity in the US.
AVI USA helps connect US and international donors and partners with the community and initiatives in Auroville, facilitating charitable and educational efforts that embody the vision of Auroville’s founders, The Mother and Sri Aurobindo.
In the United States, a 501(c)(3) is a federally recognized nonprofit organization that operates for charitable, educational, or religious purposes and is exempt from federal income tax. Donations from US based individuals and businesses are generally tax-deductible as allowed by law, an incentive designed to encourage charitable giving.
This designation also comes with important limitations. As a 501(c)(3), AVI USA’s role is to support Auroville’s founding principles through education, outreach, and project-based collaboration. Engagement with government entities is strictly nonpartisan and administrative, aimed at collaborating in ways that align with the educational mission and outreach activities.
As a U.S.-based nonprofit, AVI USA is strictly prohibited from engaging in social or political advocacy, especially in international contexts. Organizations that focus on public advocacy or social transformation are typically structured as private foundations or 501(c)(4) entities—a fundamentally different classification from the 501(c)(3). These organizations operate under separate legal and administrative frameworks, and in many cases, donations to them are not tax-deductible.
AVI USA is in the same category as established humanitarian nonprofits like The Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, or educational and cultural institutions like The Smithsonian Institution, which, like AVI USA, are 501(c)(3) organizations focused on charitable, nonpartisan missions.
A “Friends Of” organization is a U.S.-based nonprofit that supports charitable projects outside the United States. Such organizations must be legally independent from the foreign groups they assist and maintain full discretion and control over how donations are used.
AVI USA operates as a “Friends Of” organization by carefully vetting and approving every project it supports. We ensure all grants serve recognized charitable purposes under U.S. law, safeguarding donor contributions and aligning with the mission of Auroville. AVI USA is a steward of your donations, ensuring they advance the shared vision of Auroville while complying with U.S. legal requirements.
To maintain compliance with IRS rules and uphold our nonprofit status as a 501(c)(3) AVI USA follows rigorous operational practices, including:
- Detailed record-keeping and documentation for all grants and activities.
- Regular monitoring and reporting on supported projects, including site visits.
- Exercising full discretion and control over funds to ensure they are used appropriately.
- Adhering to transparency and accountability standards through ongoing legal and financial oversight.
These measures ensure that your donations are handled responsibly and that AVI USA remains a trustworthy steward of your support. These measures protect our donors and uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability.
Auroville International USA (AVI USA) is a fully independent nonprofit organization operating under U.S. law. While AVI USA shares a commitment to supporting the ideals of Auroville, it is separate from the global Auroville International group.
Auroville International is an organization incorporated in the Netherlands. This organization is governed by a board of directors that is affiliated with various national AVIs, but it acts independently and pursues its own initiatives, distinct from the national AVIs like AVI USA. Auroville International does not represent or speak on behalf of the national organizations.
Each national AVI, including AVI USA, manages its own governance, fundraising, and project support according to its country’s legal requirements while upholding the shared vision of Auroville.
At AVI USA, we honor your intention to support the projects you care about. Donations are directed to carefully vetted initiatives that embody Auroville’s founding principles. While we strive to allocate funds according to donor preferences, we maintain rigorous oversight and approval processes to ensure compliance with U.S. nonprofit regulations and to guarantee that all contributions are used effectively and responsibly.
A portion of donations supports essential operational expenses, such as staff salaries, legal compliance, and ongoing project monitoring that uphold our commitment to transparency and accountability. We are dedicated to keeping our donors informed through regular updates, demonstrating the meaningful impact your generosity makes possible.
